Summer and Sunshine

Taking advantage of warm summer weather yields plenty of physical, emotional, and social benefits, especially when coupled with physical activity and quality time with loved ones.

Something as simple as exposure to sunlight can induce the release of serotonin, a happy hormone.  When we don’t have enough serotonin, we can be affected by SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).  With long daylight hours in the summer, we have plenty of opportunity to catch some sunlight.

Physical activity can also release happy hormones known as endorphins.  Not only is exercise good for the muscles and cardiovascular system, it can also be a mood enhancer and regulator.

Some simple things I and my peers do to take advantage of the warmer days include:

1.Trail running/walks

Enjoying the outdoors does not necessarily mean we need to buy new equipment and gadgets.  Even going to a local trail, park, or scenic neighbourhood and running or just walking is a fantastic way to get some exercise, enjoy the weather, and some sunshine.

2. Gardening/yard projects

There are numerous benefits to working in the yard.  For many, the tactile experience of working with one’s hands and with the earth is incredibly grounding and therapeutic.  It is also a fantastic way to utilize creativity and problem solving, and a great form of exercise that feels both fun and productive.

3. Picnics

Not only can you make it healthier and more budget friendly than eating out in the conventional sense, it is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and get some sunshine.

These activities can be enjoyed both with others, or solo so they can be a way to share memories and catch up, or personal time to decompress and recharge.  In both cases, they’re great ways to keep moving and get the mood-enhancing benefits of the sun.
