Our world moves so fast, finding time to unwind can be challenging. You may have tried different ways to relax—maybe scrolling through your phone or watching TV—but still feel like true rest is just not happening for you. If this sounds familiar, I’d like to share a simple practice that combines journaling with relaxation techniques to help you pause, relax and reconnect.
Why Relaxation Journaling?
Relaxation journaling is a quick, accessible way to slow down and create a moment of calm. Unlike traditional journaling, which can feel open-ended or even demanding, this practice is designed to be brief and intentional. It allows you to clear mental clutter while also grounding yourself in the present moment.
How to Try It:
1. Choose a Special Journal: Treat yourself to a new journal —something that you’re excited to open. If a plain notebook works best, that's great too!
2. Set a Timer for Two Minutes: Begin writing or doodling without any pressure to write on a specific topic or even feeling that it has to make sense. Let your thoughts flow freely, capturing whatever comes to mind.
3. Pause for a Relaxation Technique: Take another two minutes to practice a simple relaxation method. This could be deep breathing, visualizing a peaceful place, or gentle stretching. The idea is to shift your focus from your mind to your body.
4. Return to Your Journal: Spend a final two minutes reflecting on how you feel. You might notice your mind feels less cluttered, your thoughts are more organized, or your doodles become more expressive.
Why It Works
This practice is effective because it balances expression and relaxation. Writing can help release pent-up thoughts, while the relaxation technique offers a break from mental busyness. By combining the two, you create a mini reset that helps you reconnect with yourself, even on hectic days.
Give It a Try!
If you’re curious, try relaxation journaling! It’s a simple way to find a pocket of peace and recalibrate. And if you do try it, I’d love to hear how it feels for you.
